Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness: How To Remember Easily ?

  • M – Multiple secondary lesions less likely in STARI
  • A – Average diameter of lesions tends to be smaller (~8 cm)
  • S – Central clearing more likely in STARI
  • T – Tick vector is Amblyomma americanum (Lone Star tick)
  • E – Erythema migrans of Lyme disease is similar to STARI
  • R – Rash illness caused by Unknown (possibly Borrelia lonestari or other Borrelia spirochetes)
  • D – Disease commonly found in southern United States
  • I – In regions where Lyme disease is uncommon
  • E – Easier to recall tick bite in STARI
  • T – Tick bite is more likely to be recalled in STARI
