Here is a quick mnemonic “RELAPSE to remember about Relapsing Fever Rash

The rash usually begins on the trunk and can spread to other parts of the body, including the extremities. As the name suggests, the rash tends to migrate or change its location over time, which is a key characteristic that helps differentiate it from other rashes.

This can be valuable for patients as well as medical doctors, nurses & students doing their clinical rounds. You can also find it very useful for med exams like USMLE, NEET PG, FMGE, NExT & NCLEX exams

Relapsing Fever Rash : How To Remember Easily ?

  • R – Rash appears centrally at the end of febrile episode in relapsing fever caused by Borrelia species.
  • E – Exposure to ticks or body lice can lead to the transmission of relapsing fever.
  • L – Largely, some cases of relapsing fever may present with petechiae, tiny red spots on the skin.
  • A – Affected individuals may experience recurrent fever in relapsing fever.
  • P – Persistent headache is a common symptom of relapsing fever.
  • S – Severe muscle pain or myalgias are observed during episodes of relapsing fever.
  • E – Enlargement of the liver and spleen, known as hepatosplenomegaly, may occur in relapsing fever.
