Here is a quick mnemonic “DON’T TOUCH ME“ to remember about Papilledema

This can be valuable for patients as well as medical doctors, nurses & students doing their clinical rounds. You can also find it very useful for med exams like USMLE, MBBS, NEET PG, FMGE, NExT, MCAT & NCLEX exams

Papilledema : How To Remember Easily ?

  • D – Disc swelling: Connotes bilateral optic disc swelling from raised intracranial pressure.
  • O – Other forms: All other forms of optic disc swelling should be called “optic disc edema.”
  • N – Neurological symptoms: Optic nerve sheath fenestration does not address other neurologic symptoms.
  • T – Testing: Visual field testing shows enlarged blind spots and peripheral constriction.
  • T – Transient obscurations: Transient visual obscurations are a classic symptom of papilledema.
  • O – One eye or both: Obscurations occur in only one eye or simultaneously in both eyes.
  • U – Unremitting papilledema: With unremitting papilledema, peripheral visual field loss progresses.
  • C – Compression: Placement of a stent across the junction of the transverse and sigmoid dural sinuses is a new treatment option.
  • H – Hemorrhage and edema: Papilledema accompanied by macular edema and hemorrhage can affect visual acuity.
  • M – Measurement: Inaccurate pressure readings are a common pitfall when measuring intracranial pressure.
  • E – Elevated pressure: An elevated pressure, with normal cerebrospinal fluid, points to pseudotumor cerebri.
