Otitis Media With Effusion : How To Remember Easily ?

  • S – Serous otitis media, also known as Otitis Media with Effusion.
  • E – Etiology includes viral infections and allergies.
  • R – Recurrent episodes are common in young children.
  • O – Otoscope examination reveals translucent or gray tympanic membrane with fluid.
  • U – Impaired language development and communication difficulties may occur.
  • S – Sound conduction and hearing are decreased.
  • O – Ossicles may be enveloped or destroyed by cholesteatomas.
  • T – Treatment includes myringotomy with tympanostomy tube insertion.
  • I – Infants may undergo auditory brainstem response measurement.
  • T – Tympanometry and audiometry are part of the evaluation.
  • I – If OME persists for >3 months, it is called chronic serous otitis media.
  • S – Speech or language-delayed children may require aggressive treatment
