Otitis Externa Treatment : How To Remember Easily ?

  • T – Topical antibacterial drugs with a glucocorticoid for 7-10 days should be the mainstay of treatment.
  • R – Recurrence of otitis externa can be prevented with periodic acetic acid or aluminum acetate drops.
  • E – Ear wicks or gauze impregnated with anti-infective agents can be placed if topical treatment doesn’t improve the condition within 2-4 days.
  • A – Analgesia should be provided with acetaminophen or an NSAID.
  • T – Topical aluminum acetate may be as effective as a topical antibacterial-glucocorticoid regimen.
  • O – Oral antipseudomonal antibiotics are often prescribed for malignant otitis externa.
  • T – Topical antifungals and oral antibiotics are ineffective treatments for otitis externa.
  • I – In patients with tympanic membrane perforation, polymyxin B-neomycin-hydrocortisone should be avoided due to ototoxicity.
  • S – Sometimes, patients with malignant otitis externa require IV pain medication, fluids, or other antimicrobials.
