Here is a quick mnemonic “ORBITAL CELULITIS to remember about Orbital Cellulitis

This can be valuable for patients as well as medical doctors, nurses & students doing their clinical rounds. You can also find it very useful for med exams like USMLE, MBBS, NEET PG, FMGE, NExT, MCAT & NCLEX exams

Orbital Cellulitis: How To Remember Easily ?

  • O- Orbital: The infection affects the orbit.
  • R – Restricted motility: Eye movement is limited.
  • B – Blood cultures: Should be obtained, but they are usually negative.
  • I – Imaging: Immediate imaging of the orbits is necessary.
  • T – Therapy: Broad-spectrum IV antibiotics are the primary treatment.
  • A – Abscess: Surgical drainage may be needed for an orbital abscess.
  • L – Leukocytosis: Increased white blood cell count is observed.
  • C – Conjugtival chemosis: Inflammation of the conjunctiva occurs.
  • E – Erythema: Redness of the eyelid is present.
  • L – Lid: Eyelid is affected and shows signs of inflammation.
  • U – Upper respiratory tract infection: History of recent infection is significant.
  • L – Leukocytosis: Another reminder of the increased white blood cell count.
  • I – Immediate treatment: Orbital cellulitis should be managed aggressively.
  • T – Thick mucus secretions: Associated with chronic sinusitis or dental disease.
  • I -Initially: visual sharpness is reduced.
  • S – Spread: Often arises from contiguous spread of infection.
