Here is a quick mnemonic “OPTIC NEURITIS to remember about Optic Neuritis

This can be valuable for patients as well as medical doctors, nurses & students doing their clinical rounds. You can also find it very useful for med exams like USMLE, MBBS, NEET PG, FMGE, NExT, MCAT & NCLEX exams

Optic Neuritis : How To Remember Easily ?

  • O- Optic: Optic neuritis affects the optic nerve.
  • P – Pain: Patients with optic neuritis often experience ocular pain, especially with eye movements.
  • T – Trial: The Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial (ONTT) studied this condition.
  • I – Inflammatory: Optic neuritis is a common inflammatory disease.
  • C – Common: Optic neuritis is a common condition.
  • N – Nerve: Optic neuritis affects the optic nerve.
  • E – Examination: Initial examination may show a normal ocular fundus.
  • U – Untreated: Vision can gradually recover without treatment.
  • R – Recovery: Even without treatment, patients experience a gradual recovery of vision.
  • I – Improvement: Lack of vision improvement after the first attack casts doubt on the diagnosis.
  • T – Treatment: High-dose IV methylprednisolone followed by oral prednisone is often recommended for severe cases.
  • I – Isolated: Optic neuritis can be an isolated event for some patients.
  • S – Scan: Brain magnetic resonance scan is advisable after the first attack
