Here is a quick mnemonic “NECROSIS to remember about Myopathic Weakness

This can be valuable for patients as well as medical doctors, nurses & students doing their clinical rounds. You can also find it very useful for med exams like USMLE, NEET PG, FMGE, NExT & NCLEX exams

Myopathic Weakness : How To Remember Easily ?

  • N: Necrosis causes a reduction in the number of muscle fibers within motor units.
  • E: EMG shows decreased size of each motor unit action potential.
  • C: Contractile force of muscle fibers is lost in some myopathies.
  • R: Rapid recruitment of motor units is necessary in myopathies with muscle fiber necrosis.
  • O: Overall, weakness is produced by a decrease in the number or contractile force of muscle fibers.
  • S: Selective involvement of type II (fast) fibers contributes to weakness in certain myopathies.
  • I: Inflammatory myopathies and muscular dystrophies can lead to myopathic weakness.
  • S: Size discrepancy between electrical activity and force of a muscle indicates certain myopathies.
