When the heart stops beating due to insufficient electrical activity, this condition is known as pulseless electrical activity (PEA). A person in cardiac arrest does not have a pulse and has entered a life-threatening medical emergency. In contrast to other heart arrhythmias, PEA cannot be treated with a defibrillator since it is considered a “nonshockable” rhythm.
