Infants who are breastfed by mothers who are deficient in thiamine are more likely to develop infantile beriberi.
Deficiencies in thiamine intake during nursing might cause this condition. Infants who are fed formula with insufficient thiamine can also get the condition, as sadly happened in Israel in 2003.
