Neck pain is a common complaint, and there are many potential causes. Some common causes of neck pain include poor posture, muscle strain or sprain, whiplash, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, osteoarthritis, and spinal stenosis.

Miscellaneous Neck Pain Causes : How To Remember Easily ?

  • N – Neck pain and stiffness are common symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis affecting cervical facet joints.

  • E – Erosive disease can lead to atlantoaxial subluxation, which can cause forward displacement of the atlas on the axis and produce neck pain.

  • C – Careful assessment is important when subluxation is present to identify early signs of myelopathy that could be a harbinger of life-threatening spinal cord compression.

  • K – Knowledge of the degree of subluxation correlates with the severity of erosive disease.

  • P – Plain x-ray films of the neck should be routinely performed preoperatively to assess the risk of neck hyperextension in patients requiring intubation.

  • A – Ankylosing spondylitis is another cause of neck pain and less commonly atlantoaxial subluxation.

  • I – Infections, such as osteomyelitis and epidural abscess, and metabolic bone diseases may also be the cause of neck pain.

  • N – Neck pain may also be referred from the heart with coronary artery ischemia (cervical angina syndrome).
