Linezolid is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, such as pneumonia, skin infections, and bloodstream infections. It is a man-made antibiotic that works by stopping bacteria from making proteins by binding to the 23S ribosomal RNA on the bacterial ribosome.
Linezolid can be taken by mouth or given through a vein. It is usually used for short-term treatment, usually for 10 to 14 days. It is usually well tolerated, with diarrhea, nausea, headaches, and vomiting being the most common side effects.
It’s important to know that linezolid can react badly with some drugs, especially antidepressants, and cause serious side effects like serotonin syndrome. Before starting treatment with linezolid, it is important to tell your doctor about all the medicines you are already taking.
