Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy : How To Remember Easily ?

  • L – Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy affects young men, causing visual loss.
  • E – Each eye is affected sequentially, with the second eye following the first.
  • B – Both eyes experience painless, progressive central visual loss.
  • E – Eventually, optic atrophy develops.
  • R – The optic disc appears plethoric with telangiectasias but no leakage.
  • S – Surface capillary telangiectasias are observed on fluorescein angiography.
  • O – Optic atrophy is a characteristic feature of Leber’s optic neuropathy.
  • P – Point mutation at codon 11778 in mitochondrial gene causes the disease.
  • T – The mitochondrial gene encodes the NADH subunit 4.
  • I – It is inherited maternally and affects both eyes.
  • C – Clinical trials for gene therapy have been unsuccessful.
