Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca : How To Remember Easily ?

  • K – Known as dry eye, this produces a burning foreign-body sensation.
  • E – Eye appears surprisingly normal, but tear production is deficient.
  • R – Reducing lacrimal secretion, systemic drugs contribute to dry eye.
  • A – Antihistaminic, anticholinergic, and psychotropic medications cause dry eye.
  • T – Tear production measured by wetting of a filter paper is deficient.
  • O – Ocular drying is common after lesions affecting cranial nerve V or VII.
  • C – Corneal anesthesia exposes the cornea to injury without pain.
  • O – Orbits included in radiation therapy can lead to dry eye.
  • N – Normal blink reflex absence exposes the cornea to injury.
  • J – Jögren’s syndrome causes dry eye due to lacrimal gland involvement.
  • U – Undergoing radiation therapy may result in dry eye.
  • N – Nerves V or VII lesions contribute to ocular drying.
  • C – Cornea can be injured due to corneal anesthesia.
