Here is a quick mnemonic “HEAVEN to remember about Jerk Nystagmus

This can be valuable for patients as well as medical doctors, nurses & students doing their clinical rounds. You can also find it very useful for med exams like USMLE, MBBS, NEET PG, FMGE, NExT, MCAT & NCLEX exams

Jerk Nystagmus : How To Remember Easily ?

  • H: Horizontal nystagmus can be observed.
  • E: Eyes may show nystagmoid movements on ophthalmoscopy.
  • A: Asymmetric slow drift off the target followed by a fast corrective saccade characterizes jerk nystagmus.
  • V: Variation in the pattern of nystagmus may occur with different gaze positions.
  • E: Essentially, some patients experience blurred vision or oscillopsia (subjective to-and-fro movement of the environment) corresponding to the nystagmus.
  • N: Nystagmus may be downbeat, upbeat, horizontal (left or right), or torsional.
