Initial Evaluation of Syncope : How To Remember Easily ?

  • H – History should include a detailed assessment of symptoms such as chest discomfort, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, or headache.
  • E – Eyewitness questioning is essential to gather additional information about the episode.
  • A – Assessment of vital signs, including blood pressure and heart rate, should be performed in both supine and standing positions to check for orthostatic hypotension.
  • D – Detailed physical and neurological examinations are necessary to identify any abnormalities.
  • A – An ECG should be conducted to detect any arrhythmias or underlying cardiac diseases.
  • C – Carotid sinus massage may be considered for patients with symptoms suggestive of carotid sinus syncope.
  • H – Holter monitoring or loop recorders should be used for patients with frequent syncopal episodes to capture abnormal cardiac rhythms.
  • E – Echocardiography is recommended for patients with a history of cardiac disease or suspected abnormalities.
