You are currently viewing Horizontal Gaze – Mnemonic

Here is a quick mnemonic “HORIZONTAL to remember about Horizontal Gaze

This can be valuable for patients as well as medical doctors, nurses & students doing their clinical rounds. You can also find it very useful for med exams like USMLE, MBBS, NEET PG, FMGE, NExT, MCAT & NCLEX exams

Horizontal Gaze : How To Remember Easily ?

  • H – Horizontal Gaze: The cortical inputs mediating horizontal gaze ultimately converge at the level of the pons.
  • O – Outputs: Neurons in the paramedian pontine reticular formation are responsible for controlling conjugate gaze toward the same side.
  • R – Reticular Formation: The paramedian pontine reticular formation plays a crucial role in horizontal gaze control.
  • I – Ipsilateral: The neurons project directly to the ipsilateral abducens nucleus.
  • Z – Zoning In: A lesion of either the paramedian pontine reticular formation or the abducens nucleus causes an ipsilateral conjugate gaze palsy.
  • O – Ocular Stimulation: Vestibular stimulation (oculocephalic maneuver or caloric irrigation) can be used to assess gaze responses.
  • N – Non-responsiveness: Lesions at either locus produce nearly identical clinical syndromes, except for the response to vestibular stimulation.
  • T – Testing: Testing the response to vestibular stimulation helps differentiate between lesions of the paramedian pontine reticular formation and the abducens nucleus.
  • A – Abducens Nucleus: A lesion of the abducens nucleus causes an ipsilateral conjugate gaze palsy.
  • L – Lesions: Lesions of the paramedian pontine reticular formation or the abducens nucleus can result in impaired horizontal gaze.
