Here is a quick mnemonic “CONTRALESIONAL to remember about Hemispatial Neglect

This can be valuable for patients as well as medical doctors, nurses & students doing their clinical rounds. You can also find it very useful for med exams like USMLE, MBBS, NEET PG, FMGE, NExT, MCAT & NCLEX exams

Hemispatial Neglect : How To Remember Easily ?

  • C – Contralesional neglect is an outcome of damage to the cortical or subcortical components of this network.
  • O – One model suggests that the right hemisphere directs attention within the entire extrapersonal space.
  • N – Neglect is more common, severe, and longer lasting after damage to the right hemisphere than the left hemisphere.
  • T – The traditional view that neglect always denotes a parietal lobe lesion is inaccurate.
  • R – Right hemisphere lesions give rise to severe contralesional left hemispatial neglect.
  • A – Attentional mechanisms of the right hemisphere can compensate for the loss of contralaterally directed attentional functions of the left hemisphere.
  • L – Left hemisphere lesions do not give rise to much contralesional neglect due to the compensatory mechanisms of the right hemisphere.
  • E – Even in left-handers with left hemisphere lesions, severe neglect for the right hemispace is rare.
  • S – Severe neglect is more common after damage to the right hemisphere.
  • I – Ipsilateral attentional mechanisms are not present in the unaffected left hemisphere.
  • O – Outcome of damage to the cortical or subcortical components of this network is contralesional neglect.
  • N – Neglect for the right hemispace is more severe after damage to the right hemisphere.
  • A – Attention is directed mostly within the contralateral right hemispace by the left hemisphere.
  • L – Left hemisphere lesions do not cause much contralesional neglect.
