Epileptic Coma : How To Remember Easily ?

  • E – Electrical seizures are associated with coma.
  • P – Postictal state follows a seizure.
  • I – In the evaluation of unexplained coma, EEG monitoring is used.
  • L – Locally toxic molecules are the by-product of seizures.
  • E – Energy reserves may be exhausted in the postictal state.
  • P – Prolonged postictal state can last for hours or even days.
  • T – The background EEG activity shows generalized slowing.
  • I – It is important to exclude epilepsy as a treatable etiology in unexplained coma.
  • C – Coma can occur even in the absence of motor convulsions.
  • O – Often, EEG monitoring is used to evaluate unexplained coma.
  • M – Metabolic encephalopathies show similar EEG slowing.
