Ecthyma gangrenosum is a severe skin infection that manifests as a rash. It is most commonly associated with a bacterial infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, although it can also be caused by other bacteria such as Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus.

Ecthyma gangrenosum typically occurs in individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those with severe neutropenia (low white blood cell count) or immunodeficiency disorders.

This can be valuable for patients as well as medical doctors, nurses & students doing their clinical rounds. You can also find it very useful for med exams like USMLE, NEET PG, FMGE, NExT & NCLEX exams

Ecthyma Gangrenosum Rash : How To Remember Easily ?

  • E – Erythematous halo surrounding the lesion
  • C – Commonly found in axillary, groin, and perianal regions
  • T – Typically affects neutropenic patients
  • H – Hemorrhagic bulla or pustule formation
  • Y – Yielding an eschar formation
  • M – Most frequently caused by P. aeruginosa, other gram-negative rods, and fungi
  • A – Associated with clinical signs of sepsis
