Cough Mechanism : How To Remember Easily ?

  • M – Mechanical and chemical stimuli initiate the cough reflex.
  • E – External auditory canal and esophagus contain sensory nerve endings.
  • C – C fibers and Aδ fibers transmit signals centrally.
  • H – Highly orchestrated series of involuntary muscular actions are involved in the cough reflex.
  • A – Afferent nerve endings innervate various respiratory structures.
  • N – Neural networks in the brainstem process sensory input.
  • I – Integrated signals result in the conscious sensation of the “urge to cough.”
  • S – Superior laryngeal and vagus nerves transmit sensory signals.
  • M – Muscles contract and generate positive intrathoracic pressures during coughing.
  • I – Involuntary and voluntary pathways contribute to the cough reflex.
  • S – Smooth-muscle contraction narrows airway lumens during coughing.
  • M – Maximal expiratory flow is increased during coughing.
