Congenital Anomalies Of The Lumbar Spine : How To Remember Easily ?

  • L: “LBP in adolescents” – Spondylolysis is the most common cause of persistent LBP in adolescents and is often associated with sports-related activities.
  • U: “Unusual curvature” – Scoliosis refers to an abnormal curvature in the coronal (lateral) plane of the spine.
  • M: “Meninges and spinal cord” – Spina bifida occulta (closed spinal dysraphism) is a failure of closure of one or several vertebral arches posteriorly; the meninges and spinal cord are normal.
  • B: “Below L1 and L2” – Tethered cord syndrome typically reveals a low-lying conus (below L1 and L2) on MRI studies.
  • A: “Abnormal spine development” – The abnormal curvature in scoliosis may be congenital, due to abnormal spine development.
  • R: “Repetitive minor injuries” – Symptoms of spondylolysis may occur in the setting of a single injury, repeated minor injuries, or during a growth spurt.
  • S: “Short and thickened filum terminale” – Tethered cord syndrome is typically associated with a short and thickened filum terminale on MRI studies.
  • P: “Progressive cauda equina disorder” – Tethered cord syndrome usually presents as a progressive cauda equina disorder.
  • I: “Incidental findings” – Spina bifida occulta may be discovered incidentally during a physical examination for back pain.
  • N: “Neuromuscular disease – The abnormal curvature in scoliosis may be progressive due to paraspinal neuromuscular disease.
  • E: “Effective detection” – Multislice CT with multiplanar reformation is the most accurate modality for detecting spondylolysis in adults.
