Here is a quick mnemonic “COMA TREATMENT to remember about Coma Treatment

This can be valuable for patients as well as medical doctors, nurses & students doing their clinical rounds. You can also find it very useful for med exams like USMLE, MBBS, NEET PG, FMGE, NExT, MCAT & NCLEX exams

Coma Treatment : How To Remember Easily ?

  • C – Correct hypotension, hypoglycemia, hypercalcemia, hypoxia, hypercapnia, and hyperthermia rapidly.
  • O – Osmotic demyelination should be avoided by correcting hyponatremia slowly.
  • M – Maintain an open oropharyngeal airway in a drowsy patient who is breathing normally.
  • A – Administer naloxone and dextrose if opioid overdose or hypoglycemia are possibilities.
  • T – Tracheal intubation is indicated for apnea, upper airway obstruction, hypoventilation, or risk of aspiration.
  • R – Raise intracranial pressure (ICP) management is discussed separately.
  • E – Establish IV access for administration of necessary medications.
  • A – Act promptly with IV tissue plasminogen activator or mechanical embolectomy for suspected ischemic stroke.
  • T – Treat anticholinergic-type drug overdose with physostigmine under careful monitoring.
  • M – Monitor carefully when administering hypotonic IV solutions in acute brain illness.
  • E – Examine for cervical spine injuries before intubation or evaluation of oculocephalic responses.
  • N – Need for urgent examination of CSF arises when fever and meningismus are present.
  • T – Treat suspected acute bacterial meningitis with antibiotics and dexamethasone.
