Chronic Spastic Paraparesis : How To Remember Easily ?

  • C – Chronic spastic paraparesis is caused by upper motor neuron disease.
  • A – Associated with lower-limb sensory loss and sphincter involvement, a chronic spinal cord disorder should be considered.
  • U – Upper motor neuron signs associated with drowsiness, confusion, seizures, or other hemispheric signs may require brain MRI.
  • S – Spinal MRI is typically the initial investigation in cases of subacute or chronic spastic paraparesis.
  • E – Electrophysiologic studies can be diagnostically helpful when clinical findings suggest an underlying neuromuscular disorder.
  • D – Drowsiness, confusion, seizures, or other hemispheric signs may necessitate brain MRI as an initial investigation.
  • B – Brain MRI should be performed when upper motor neuron signs are present with drowsiness, confusion, seizures, or other hemispheric signs.
  • Y – When investigating subacute or chronic spastic paraparesis, the absence of spasticity suggests a lower motor neuron or myopathic etiology.
