Approach To A Patient With Sleep Disorder : How To Remember Easily ?

  • S – Seek help from a physician due to sleepiness or tiredness during the day.
  • L – Look for difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep at night (insomnia).
  • E – Examine unusual behaviors during sleep itself (parasomnias).
  • E – Essential to obtain a careful history, considering duration, severity, and consistency of symptoms.
  • P – Patient’s estimate of the consequences of the sleep disorder on waking function is important.
  • I – Information from bed partner or family member can be helpful in assessing symptoms.
  • N – Note the patient’s bedtime, sleep onset, wake-up time, awakenings during sleep, and morning restfulness.
  • E – Evaluate if the patient naps during the day.
