Amaurosis Fugax : How To Remember Easily ?

  • A – A transient ischemic attack affects the retina.
  • M – Metabolism in neural tissue is high.
  • A – Also, interruption of blood flow to the retina causes transient monocular blindness.
  • U – Ultra Vision fades rapidly like a descending curtain.
  • R – Retinal arteriole embolus leads to amaurosis fugax.
  • O – Ophthalmoscopy reveals whitened, edematous retina.
  • S – Source of emboli can be atherosclerotic plaque.
  • I – Inner retina suffers infarction with prolonged interruption of blood flow.
  • S – Systemic hypertension causes sclerosis of retinal arterioles.
  • F – Focal infarcts of the nerve fiber layer occur in hypertensive retinopathy.
  • U – Urgent treatment is needed for acute hypertensive retinopathy.
  • G – Glaucoma is a risk factor for retinal vein occlusion.
  • A – Also numerous retinal hemorrhages occur in venous occlusion.
